Resumo:
“Synthetic plastic materials from petroleum are widely used for different applications. However, these materials has raised several environmental concerns, from the petroleum extraction and processing, to the generation of massive nondegradable waste. Therefore, alternative sustainable materials from renewable resources are being developed as alternatives. Among different natural biopolymers, starch is one of the most extensively used renewable resource due to its availability, low price, and biodegradability. However, the starch-based materials have some in comparison with traditional plastics, such as its low stability, poor mechanical properties, and strong interaction with water. In this conference, different strategies to overcome those challenges will be discussed, involving modification of starch molecules, blend with other biopolymers and/or the addition of bio-based fillers for reinforcement. Examples in different applications will be detailed, from packaging to health.”
